What is conservatory insulation and why do I need it?

Conservatory insulation is any material that helps to keep heat in (or out) of your conservatory. This can be anything from specialised conservatory roof insulation to draught-proofing around doors and windows.

A well-insulated conservatory is much more comfortable to use all year round, as it will stay cooler in summer and warmer in winter. Not only will this make it a more versatile space, but it can also help to reduce your energy bills.

The benefits of insulating a conservatory:

Insulating a conservatory has tons of benefits, including:

  • Keeps cool in summer
  • Keeps warm in winter
  • Reduced energy bills
  • Perfect environment to cultivate plants

Choosing the right material for insulating a conservatory

When choosing an insulating material for a conservatory, it is important to consider its R-value, which is its ability to resist heat transfer. The higher the R-value, the better the material will be at insulating your space.

It is also important to assess the amount of sunlight that enters the conservatory, as this will impact the level of heat retention required. You should also consider the type of insulation that will best suit your specific needs - whether it be film, foil or something entirely different.

How to install insulation for a conservatory with Xtratherm PIR insulation:

DISCLAIMER: This guide acts as a brief outline for conservatory insulation. Be sure to consult a professional before starting your project.

Step 1:

Before beginning, ensure you have your PIR insulation boards, a saw to cut the boards, protective gloves and eyewear, electrical tape, and a good sealant for the edges.

Step 2:

Measure your conservatory's walls and ceiling so you can purchase enough insulation board for the space.

Step 3:

Cut the boards to size using a saw and mark an indication of which end of the board should go against the wall. Make sure to wear protective gloves and eyewear to avoid any cuts or injuries from manipulation of sharp edges and glass fibre particles that may be present in the material.

Step 4:

Begin by fitting the boards to the walls of your conservatory, ensuring they fit tightly together with no gaps or air pockets between them that could let cold air in.

Step 5:

Secure each panel with electrical tape along each side where it meets another panel to ensure there are no gaps between panels after installation is completed.

Step 6:

Repeat this process until all of your walls are insulated, then move on to insulating your ceiling using both insulation panels as well as backing strips that will further prevent any drafts from entering through cracks or gaps in the ceiling area of your conservatory.

Step 7:

Finally, once all insulation has been installed around your conservatory, use a quality sealant along all seams and joints where two sections meet (such as where two insulation panels come together). This will ensure draughts are eradicated or at the very least kept to a minimum.
